ePortfolios Benefits Your Profile and Career
ePortfolios are an important assessment tool that are indispensable in today’s job economy. I have seen it first hand as an employer and as someone who guides new entrants into the IT field that having an ePortfolio is crucial to your success. The resume and cover letter is still important but when it comes to many fields and jobs, how do you distinguish “who can actually do the job”? On paper many people will look the same, but in practice, their performance and abilities will be wide ranging.
An ePortfolio demonstrates to potential employers, customers, and the industry what you can do. It also strengthens your own knowledge and can be a tool you refer to reflect on to brush up on a certain area. In technology we don’t use all of our skills each day, there are periods of time where we may need more of a certain skill. This is the dual purpose that an ePortfolio serves.
Your ePortfolio if done well, also shows some of your aptitude, attitude and professionalism and gives a great “preview” of who you are and what the employer can expect. I would argue that it is perhaps one of the strongest references, yourself, showing and proving you have what it takes.
My favorite ePortfolio tool is a blog, whether hosted or self-hosted it really is a fantastic way for the world, industry and employers to get to know you. Just remember to keep your blog clean, professional and it will only help grow your success and always keep adding new content.
To put it simply some of the core benefits of having an ePortfolio include: enhances your professional profile, attract clients/employers, expand your network, compliments your resume, establish an online footprint/presence, build skills and stay up to date, and establish yourself as a leader.
There is no downside to having an ePortfolio and if you don’t already have one, I strongly recommend that you got a WordPress blog or similar to showcase your skills and talents!
